GOOD NIGHT OPPY

Updated: Feb 6, 2023

Good Night Oppy had me welling up more than once as I rooted all the way for the Mars rovers at the centre of the film. It's easily one of the best movies of the year.

If you are still unconvinced that space exploration remains one of humankinds most enduring accomplishments, the wonderful new documentary Good Night Oppy is sure to win you over.

The picture focuses on the mission of the rovers Spirit and Opportunity to the planet Mars - who were only supposed to remain functional for 90 days but kept chugging on for many years, providing indelible information about the Red Planet's surface - and turns their adventures into an emotional rollercoaster that makes you truly care about the fate of the two robots and the NASA scientists who guided them on their journey.

Some might argue that Good Night Oppy is manipulative in its use of Wall-E-like anthropomorphism and its smart reliance on music as emotive element, especially with the pop music that functions as the daily wake-up calls for the robots, but I wasn't bothered by it.

On the contrary: Good Night Oppy had me welling up more than once as I rooted all the way for the Mars rovers. Simply put: this film is easily one of the best of the year.
